Young people do not often remain long in the area of La Garnacha. There is little opportunity for education and meager opportunities for employment.
Social activities, cultural events, or recreational facilities are practically non-existent. The Little Brothers of the Gospel have organized a few sports activities, and baseball is a favorite here.

Brother Patricio tells us that it is very difficult to work with the young people because they feel that there is no future for them here and they have no place to go. He speaks of a traumatic week when six of the young people that he had been meeting with committed suicide.
